Modular meat processing facilities for the extreme conditions of the Arctic
In the heart of the Arctic, far from urban infrastructure, a reindeer herding region now operates a year-round meat processing unit provided by Kometos, capable of producing up to two tons of finished meat products per day.
🦌 Client: A reindeer herding region in the Arctic
❔ Requirements: A complete reindeer meat processing facility, including slaughtering, cutting, thawing, freezing, and processing equipment
🎯 Objectives: A reindeer meat processing facility that functions reliably in extreme Arctic conditions
🔧 Solution: A 250 m² mobile slaughterhouse and modular meat processing facility designed for the Arctic environment, featuring energy-efficient systems and effective heat recovery
Challenge: Extreme Arctic conditions require unique solutions
The client’s goal was to establish a comprehensive meat processing facility comprising cutting, thawing, freezing, and processing equipment to handle both fresh and frozen meat. However, the Arctic location presented significant challenges: freezing temperatures, remote access, and the absence of urban infrastructure. Even transporting the equipment required careful planning and special arrangements.
Raimo Niemi, Sales Director at Kometos, describes the delivery process:
The reindeer herding area is deep in the Arctic, far from urban infrastructure and accessible only via remote trails. The journey from Finland began as a road transport in November. By February-March, the delivery continued over ice roads. Once at its destination, the facility waited for summer, when it was finally moved to its placement site and installed on a foundation.
Solution: Modular and energy-efficient meat processing facilities
Kometos delivered a five-module production unit spanning 250 m². The facility includes slaughtering, cutting, thawing, freezing, and processing systems, along with heat recovery systems tailored to the Arctic.
The facility’s energy sources were carefully selected to suit Arctic conditions, and the materials used in its construction were chosen to minimize environmental impact.
“In our slaughterhouses, 90% of the components are manufactured in-house, and in meat processing plants, the number is 80%. Individual machines are sourced from trusted partners worldwide, ensuring access to cutting-edge technology. Our expertise combined with our partners’ technology ensures our facilities can function even in Arctic conditions, setting us apart from competitors,” explains Raimo Niemi.
Outcome: Up to two tons of finished products daily
The result is a highly efficient facility capable of producing up to two tons of finished reindeer meat products per day.
Energy efficiency is always a priority in Kometos solutions, and this facility achieved a 50% reduction in energy costs through optimized technical choices.
The modular nature of the facility makes it a flexible solution for challenging environments. It can be delivered over long distances and to locations that are difficult to access.
“The plant includes all production facilities, social spaces, machinery, and equipment. We can deliver this type of solution to any corner of the world and for any type of meat production,” summarizes Raimo Niemi.
