Kometos' slaughterhouse and fish processing plant delivery to Alaska

Modular Food Processing Facilities Strengthen Self-Sufficiency on Saint Lawrence Island, Alaska

Kawerak Inc. and Savoonga Reindeer Commercial Company (SRCC), alongside Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation (NSEDC), ordered a total of eight modules from Finnish Kometos Oy — forming a USDA-compliant slaughterhouse and a fish processing facility for the remote Saint Lawrence Island in Alaska’s Bering Strait region. The contract was signed in May 2024. The facilities were manufactured in Finland over the winter, and the delivery departed in February. The final delivery to Saint Lawrence Island took place in the summer of 2025 after the ice had melted. The first USDA-certified slaughter at the facility took place on 4 May 2026.

Arctic Expertise as the Deciding Factor

The Savoonga community on Saint Lawrence Island is a traditional Yupik community whose livelihoods have for generations centred on fishing, hunting, and reindeer herding. When Kawerak began planning a slaughterhouse to enable the commercial sale of locally produced reindeer meat, the project team needed a supplier with genuine understanding of the conditions: extreme cold, remote location, and the practical realities of building in a place where traditional construction is not a viable option.

Kometos’ decades of experience supplying modular slaughter facilities to Sámi reindeer herding communities in Finland and Norway proved directly relevant. The company’s track record in Arctic environments — and the way its representatives engaged with the project from the outset — made the difference. Business Planning Specialist, Alice Bioff from Kawerak Inc. says:

We chose Kometos for many reasons, including cost, but more importantly, because they clearly understood the specific needs of reindeer herders in remote areas of the world. Our herders and project staff felt comfortable with the Kometos representatives right away, and their professionalism and commitment to implementing this project in our region made a strong impression.”

A Logistical Challenge Across Half the Globe

Saint Lawrence Island is reachable only by air or sea. Traditional on-site construction in such an environment is both time-consuming and costly. Modular construction reduces the amount of work that needs to happen in the field: the bulk of manufacturing takes place in controlled conditions, and the modules are shipped ready for assembly.

The eight modules travelled from Finland first to Bremerhaven, Germany, before beginning their long journey to the other side of the world: through the Panama Canal to Tacoma, near Seattle. From there, they were loaded onto a vessel operating on northern routes to their final destination.

The logistics toward the end of the journey posed a particular challenge. Vessels serving the northern routes depart only twice a year. The second sailing of the season carried the additional risk of cold weather causing delays or even cancellations — meaning the modules had to make the first vessel. There was no margin for error: missing it could, in the worst case, have delayed the installation by a full year. Both facilities, each comprising four modules, were installed simultaneously in approximately five weeks.

The fish processing facility ordered by NSEDC was built approximately 100 metres from the shoreline, where saltwater spray, severe cold, and windblown sand impose strict demands on materials. However, the panel technology used by Kometos has been specifically developed for these kinds of conditions.

A Step Towards Commercial Viability for Reindeer Meat

The slaughterhouse enables USDA-certified processing of locally raised reindeer meat — a prerequisite for selling the product commercially beyond the island. For the Savoonga community, this means that a food source with deep cultural significance can now also generate income and strengthen the local economy. The facility has a capacity of up to 50 slaughtered reindeer per day.

The fish processing facility operates seasonally, centred on the halibut fishing season, and is expected to contribute meaningfully to local employment over time. The impact is already tangible on the reindeer side: the slaughterhouse employed 13 people during its first harvest season.

First Delivery to the North American Market

For Kometos, the Alaska projects mark the company’s entry into the North American market as a supplier of food processing facilities. The two contracts — signed with Kawerak/SRCC and NSEDC — were both awarded on the basis of Arctic expertise and the ability to deliver turnkey modular solutions to logistics-challenging locations.

“The Alaska project is a significant step for us. It demonstrates that our modular facilities are an excellent fit for the North American market as well.” — Viivi Pulkkinen, Commercial Director, Kometos Oy

The project was carried out in collaboration with Coffman Engineers and local contractor TBI Construction.
