Controlled thawing under the Australian sun
Kometos has expanded its market to Australia, where the first Finncold thawing unit has been introduced. A new country always brings new noteworthy, and sometimes surprising, elements.
Thawing units from the Siberian frost to the Australian heat
From the basic properties, Finncold thawing units are the same from Siberia to Australia. However, the units are always fine-tuned according to the specific needs of the location and customer.
In Siberia, the meat production needs to prepare for -50°C temperatures, whereas in Australia, the scorching heat and significant temperature variations are key considerations. Kometos took into account Australia’s high average temperatures when designing the thawing equipment.
Another important factor in Australia was the long duration of sea freight. Luckily, this had already become familiar through deliveries to New Zealand, where Kometos has been supplying thawing units for several years. The sea journey took 54 days.
Advanced thawing technology
Kometos’ thawing technology ensures a fully controlled thawing process in Australia with minimal waste. The quality of products remains consistently high as liquids are prevented from evaporating uncontrollably.
The thawing process is controlled by temperature sensors monitoring both the internal and external temperature of the product, as well as the room temperature. This allows for a fast and controlled thawing process.
In addition to temperature, airflow and humidity are also adjusted. After thawing, the thawing system automatically transitions to storage mode, keeping the food at the desired temperature.
The importance of thawing hygiene is emphasized in high temperatures
Hygiene is always a crucial part of food production, but it becomes particularly important in high temperatures. Risto Salo, Sales Manager, highlights the advantages of Kometos’ thawing method:
Finncold thawing units utilize only indoor air, making the process extremely hygienic. Furthermore, the rooms and containers are constructed from moisture-resistant and easily cleanable ST elements with antibacterial inner surfaces. This ensures hygiene throughout the thawing process.

Local agents worldwide
In addition to its domestic sales organization and staff, Kometos has a comprehensive network of over 30 agents worldwide. The role of an agent, serving as the customer’s contact person, includes identifying the individual needs of the client and acting as an expert in local regulations and practices.
Julian Fairlie, Kometos’ Australian agent, who completed the first Australian project, expresses satisfaction:
– The first project is always a good reference to approach local players, although we had also delivered units to New Zealand before. The challenging conditions in Australia create a real need for high-quality thawing systems. Now that the Australian operation has successfully started, I look forward to the future with confidence.
