Animal welfare and stress-free slaughtering ensure quality meat
Quality meat is the future of the food industry. Europe’s first mobile cattle slaughterhouse eliminates the transportation phase of slaughter, thus improving animal welfare and meat quality. Kometos have collaborated in creating and implementing a new meat processing model, which revolves around ethically raised and processed high-quality meat, meeting market demand.
Challenge: Domestic quality meat is unlabelled in stores
According to the meat processing company Hälsingestintan, fifteen years ago, it was difficult to find domestic quality meat in stores. Although most Swedish cattle breeders produced high-quality meat, it was not identified in any way: meat arrived at slaughterhouses and stores unlabelled. This prompted Hälsingestintan to create an entirely new concept for selected and high-quality meat.
Animal welfare and stress-free slaughtering are crucial
The new concept required investments from the client. However, there were two good reasons behind it: consumers must be offered high-quality, domestic meat, and cattle farming must be world-class.
Animal welfare and stress-free slaughtering on farms are fundamental prerequisites for ethically produced quality meat. The quality of the meat is ensured by a mobile slaughterhouse supplied by Kometos, consisting of two trailer combinations. One is the actual slaughterhouse trailer with staff facilities, and the other is a separate cooling space for carcasses and organs to be preserved.
A mobile slaughterhouse created in close collaboration
Henrik Viken, Vice Managing Director of Hälsingestintan, describes how the first meeting between Hälsingestintan and Kometos provided a promising start for future development:
From the very first meeting, we trusted in good cooperation, based on our knowledge of how to produce high-quality meat and Kometos’s technical expertise.
The new model for meat production
Viken describes the new meat production concept:
– Everything is based on the growing demand for high-quality meat by consumers, as well as traceability, animal welfare, and sustainability. To produce and supply high-quality meat, the entire value chain must be controllable. Consumers are willing to pay a higher price for meat when all these aspects are in place. The slaughterhouse supplied by Kometos is an essential part of the concept, which can increase animal welfare and meat quality.
Investments are made in cattle farming, and now the stress-free slaughtering phase can be carried out in a mobile slaughterhouse arriving at the farm, managed by skilled personnel. Animal welfare improves when cramped transport vehicles and long distances are eliminated. After cooling, carcasses are transported for tendering before further processing.

The new concept is spreading across Europe
Kometos, Hälsingestintan, and the university meat research institute have collaborated in developing a new meat cattle breeding concept, covering the entire production chain from cattle farming to slaughter, and from quality meat products to marketing. The goal is to develop the entire beef production chain.
– In the development of the concept, Kometos has focused on the slaughtering step by supplying the mobile slaughterhouse according to the customer’s wishes. In the past we have delivered mobile slaughterhouses to reindeer farms in the North, but this is the first facility of its kind for cattle in Europe, says Raimo Niemi from Kometos.
